Doll Biography: Sarah Louise Mapleson
The only daughter of New York textile baron, Hugh Smithfield, and his wife, Violet Huntington Smithfield, Sarah Louise came out in society at the early age of sixteen. Finding love and marrying Donald James two years later, she had all she could have wished for. During their honeymoon tour of Europe, tragedy struck in the form of a horrendous boating accident on the Thames River. Losing her husband and almost her life as well, she returned to New York a grieving widow.
For two years she remained in mourning, until she met Jerimiah Mapleson, son of Aaron (banker) and Rebecca Mapleson.
During her second marriage she became one of New York's leading socialites, entertaining many of the most important people in the city.
Sarah Louise tragically died while giving birth to twin girls in 1890.
