Doll Biography: Isobel Sophia Duncan
In 1829, Annie Duncan, a poor Scottish immigrant, arrived in Boston, unmarried and pregnant. Finding work as a downstairs maid in a well to do household, she presented herself as a young widow to keep her respectability.
The life of genteel poverty led by Annie and her daughter, Isobel Sophia, did not suit Isobel's tempestuous nature. As a young girl her fiery temper led her to brave her mother's disapproval by joining a theater troupe. Although she had a faulty memory at times, she managed to triumph on stage with her brilliant improvisations, which, however, exasperated her fellow thespians.
At the tender age of seventeen, Isobel Sophia left Boston for New York, thinking to further her career as an actress. Going from one triumph to another, by the time she reached the age of twenty-five, she achieved that pinnacle of success she had longed for.
Isobel Sophia had a full and exciting life. Though unmarried, she certainly did not lack for male companionship, picking her beau's from the stage at the age of fifty, Isobel continued to be seen escorted by some of the most eligible and powerful men from some of the oldest and most respected families of New York and Boston.
Remaining unmarried until her death at the age of sixty-four, she still captured the hearts and souls of the various men in her life...
